"...it is important to realize that by education Montessori did not mean an attempt by adults to force the intellectual development of children. She believed in a “natural unfolding of the child’s intelligence."

What is Montessori?

Montessori is hands on learning in several areas: Math, Science, Reading, Language, Art, History, Geography, Sensorial and Practical Living. Maria Montessori was the first female physician in Italy. In 1908, she began her observations of children who were socially poor and academically behind. These observations became the foundation for “the Montessori Method.” Dr. Montessori developed specialized equipment that accommodated 3 year age spans from Infancy through Early Adulthood.

Montessori observed that children learned best by having freedom within a prepared environment. Children develop concentration through repetition and through working with their hands. Each piece of material or equipment within the classroom builds upon the next and forms the basis for all early learning.

Teachers attend a qualified Montessori training center in order to be a head teacher in a classroom. They are trained to follow the child’s interests and to give individual as well as small group lessons in all the areas of learning.
